From the bride: Alan and I have been together since we were young and it came as a surprise on New Years Eve of 2009/10 that he announced we were going to be engaged by the following year and sure enough we did just that at the top of the Belfast Eye!
It was a bit overwhelming as:
- I am very afraid of heights
- Alan was making the cabin move quite a bit trying to get down on one knee in a small space and,
- We were actually getting engaged!
The first thing I organised was the photographer and I knew I wanted Erica as she is a good friend of my now sister-in-law, so I saw how at ease she was with everyone at their wedding and plus I knew she would be amazing. Not to diss my gorgeous husband or men in general but the whole organisation of the wedding was left to me – daunting to start with seeing as I am a very unorganised person! Although looking back now I didn’t mind as he gave me free reign to organise the day I wanted for the both of us. I found it very hard to not keep referring to it as ‘my’ wedding day and kept correcting it to ‘ours’!
I would have to say to future brides though, don’t get stressed – there is no point, it doesn’t make anything magically happen it just takes away from the enjoyment of it. I got the ‘big’ things organised first ie church, hotel, photographer, band and video and then spent the rest of the time buying several copies of Getting Married in Northern Ireland (brilliant local magazine) and enjoyed daydreaming and planning the small things. I knew I wanted a colourful wedding and you will see that from my flowers – love them! Also I found the wedding dress shopping great fun – I made a day of it each Saturday and dragged my mum and one of my bridesmaids with me.
The most important thing I thought during the whole process was that I was going to enjoy every last minute of the day as I was marrying my best friend surrounded by friends and family and I did just that!
