From the bride: When we got engaged we both knew we wanted a relaxed, small wedding with a little something different. I have always dreamed of getting married in Italy, so we set about finding a place that would suit us both; this is when we discovered Taormina. We were a little nervous at first as we are both from Ireland but lived in Sydney at the time and were thinking of planning a wedding in Sicily; but as soon as we made contact with Tony from Weddings in Sicily we felt very much at ease.
We instantly fell in love with the old town and amazing views of the Ionian Sea and Mt Etna.
Our theme for the wedding was ‘vintage lace and pearls’ which derived from a combination of my Kathy de Stafford vintage inspired ivory Chantilly lace dress and the old world style of Taormina. I chose a deep dusty rose for my sister’s bridesmaid dress and a combination of cream roses and pink peonies for the bouquets. Simple arrangements of cream and pale pink roses complimented the elegant and ornate church. To continue the theme we chose invites with lace, pearls and dusty rose ribbon and I made place names and favours using kraft boxes with cream lace and twine. Everything on the day ran very smoothly and we loved every minute of it!
Our church, Chiesa del Varò, dates back to the 15th century and has a lovely simple exterior with a stunning, ornate interior. After the ceremony we strolled down the main street, as is tradition in Sicily, and had a light café reception on the main square where a fantastic Sicilian folk band entertained us. Ciarán and I set off in our vintage VW Beetle for photos around the old town and our wedding planner arranged for our guests to greet us on the terrace of our reception location, La Giara restaurant, on our return. Here we enjoyed canapés and prosecco while watching the sun set over Mt Etna. This was followed by a fantastic meal in the elegant dining room followed by speeches and cake. Ciarán and I had our first dance to Elton Johns ‘Your Song’, followed by a dance with my dad to a Bruce Springsteen favourite of ours from when I was little. And thanks to the fab DJ we didn’t stop dancing until 4am!
Our favourite parts of the day included the ceremony which was very special and intimate for us, and our first dance. We had secretly taken a few dance lessons in Sydney and really enjoyed surprising people.
A very special moment for me was walking down the aisle with my dad. We were both very emotional but it was a wonderful experience and seeing Ciarán waiting for me at the top made everything worthwhile.
We truly had the best day of our lives and the occasion was made even more amazing for us as we spent the week leading up to it in a stunning location with our close family and friends, many of which we hadn’t seen in a couple of years.
